Ways of obtaining and maintaining a relationship.

Throughout my adult life I have observed relationships in the real world and I have surfed the net for advice. I have also attempted online dating - something which I never thought I'd do. I eventually came to the conclusion that there are five ways to earn and keep a relationship. They are the following:

Be confident.
Be funny.
Be honest.
Be smart.
Be yourself.

I will now go through the five pieces of advice one by one in greater detail.

Be confident. One of the qualities that a person looks for in a partner is confidence. This is evident in online dating. Confidence brings about a sense of security and a strength in character which every partner requires. There are people who have ambition and will do whatever they can to achieve their goal no matter how difficult the process is. Now that is real confidence and that is very attractive in a potential partner. I can see why successful entrepreneurs and leaders have faithful partners because they exude confidence. The lack of confidence has always been the bane of my life. It is something that I have been addressing for a while.

Be funny. People like to laugh. People like to make others laugh. I hear that laughing is good for you. Apparently it makes you live longer but I don't buy that. One thing that laughter does do though is that it relieves people from stress. If you would like to know how then do an internet search for an explanation. Funny people are very popular. They not only make others laugh when speaking but they make others laugh with their actions, their facial expressions and the way they speak. They are neither clowns nor joke machines but they can sometimes make witty comments or one-liners. Fictional characters who are very popular are witty and come up with one-liners. It's no wonder comedy shows have a huge audience and most sitcoms are successful. Also I think that one good joke or two doesn't do any harm.

Be honest. Relationships are based on trust and honesty is one way to maintain that trust. If you expect to become one with your partner you have to be open with them, tell them everything and not keep secrets from them. Lies can ruin a relationship and once the trust is gone it is difficult to salvage it. Some people make stuff up about themselves when going online dating. They may lie about their age or their occupation. If you obtain a relationship based on lies it is unlikely to last.

Be smart. People expect their partners to be well groomed when they begin dating. It contributes a lot to first impressions. If you're a scruffy or unkempt person then you are bound to be a turn-off. Of course, once people get to know each other and live with each other they will eventually see each other at their worst in terms of appearances. But then they are well into their relationships so much so that appearances are no longer an issue. Intelligence is an attractive quality in a person. People like to be around someone who is clever and can think on their feet. They like to be around someone who is capable of solving problems. People like to learn too and if a smart person tells them facts they never knew then they are very grateful to suddenly acquire knowledge of useful information. Notice how people like Professor Brian Cox and Stephen Hawking are admired because of their vast knowledge of their specialist subjects.

Be yourself. That is the most important advice. You should never give a damn what other people think of you. If they don't like you because of what you are or who you are then screw them! No one owns you. If your partner really loves you then they will accept you no matter what. You should not be obliged to change for anyone. Personally I would rather be with a unique person than with someone who follows the crowd.

For the single people pursuing a relationship, good luck! Those who are already attached, all the best!
