Let's volunteer!

There are certain things in this world that are not fair. Some people have plenty whereas others have none. That is why charities are set up in order to help people less fortunate than ourselves. There are some generous souls who are willing to donate their well earned cash to charity. There are others who do fundraising activities such as running or sky-diving so that they can raise money for charity. There are also some people who are willing to take it a step further and volunteer.

People volunteer in order to develop their skills, learn new ones or gain work experience. However there are some selfless ones who have nothing to gain by volunteering but are egged on by a genuine desire to help others. Volunteering is about working without getting paid. It is about working without getting anything in return. The contentment of volunteers comes from knowing that they have made a difference and that they have made the less fortunate better off.

Volunteers help children and vulnerable people like the elderly, the sick and the disabled. There are organisations which promote volunteering such as Age UK and the National Trust. Even some councils are encouraging their employees to volunteer in order to benefit the community. Volunteers provide assistance in many ways. Some of them help vulnerable people or even teach them to do various tasks. Others simply keep them company. One of the purposes of volunteering is to remove the barriers that vulnerable people are faced with and to make living a lot less difficult for them.

There are people who travel to developing countries in order to provide aid and support. Some of them bring food and medicine over there. Others help the infirm and the sick. Others teach English to children in schools. Others help with growing crops and setting up springs for clean water. They even take part in building new homes. Others volunteer to protect the environment or endangered animals. There are times when I want to go to one of the developing countries myself and help out. Maybe I will do so in the future if I have a career break.

There are some people who see volunteering as an opportunity to meet new people and to experience what their lives are like. They are then able to emphasise with the less fortunate and are even more motivated to help them and make their lives better. As far as volunteers are concerned, no one can fully understand the situation of the poor, the old, the sick and the disabled until they experience it themselves. Therefore empathy and consideration are two of the important factors that make people want to volunteer.

Volunteers do not like to see or hear about other people suffering without doing anything to help them. Volunteers want to make life bearable and much easier for the less fortunate. They do so without asking for anything in return. They are genuinely kind-hearted and generous and we thank the Lord that there are people like them in this world. I for one wish that I could be more like them.

Until next time, goodbye.

  1. I've volunteered in some form or another since i was 10. I'd have to say that even altruistic people are getting something from volunteering even if it is not physical. It is that nice warm feeling that they are making a difference. But personally, i think i've gained much more than those I've helped. I've learnt far more than them and realised that charities are big businesses that in some cases rely on the preservation of the poor/rich, or powerful/powerless divide to survive.
