TV show review: 13 Reasons Why.

Recently I binge watched a 13-episode TV series which was thought-provoking and very well made. It's a Netflix original series called 13 Reasons Why. It is based on the book Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher.

The story is about a high school student Hannah Baker who commits suicide. Before she kills herself she makes a series of recordings on several cassette tapes, detailing the reasons that drove her to suicide and naming the people responsible. This is a very powerful story as it shows that actions by other people can have very serious consequences.

Hannah is befriended by several people who end up using her for their own gain. They turn out not to be true friends who let her down. They either spread false malicious rumours about her, they abandon her or they betray her. They put her down and make her feel bad about herself. Some even treat her cruelly and she becomes miserable and isolated.

Hannah has one very good friend whose name is Clay Jensen. They work together in a cinema and they become very close to the point that he falls in love with her. He is nicknamed "Helmet" by Hannah due to his tendency to ride his bike without one. He feels confident around her and he can be himself with her. They exchange banter and they are both geeky. However because of the harsh treatment by the other students she threatens to drive him away.

Through the tapes Clay eventually learns about what the other people did to her and confronts them about their actions. He also begins to feel guilty and thinks that he too has contributed to her suicide. He begins to reach out to another loner, Skye who suffers from depression. He becomes her friend in the hope that he can save her from the same fate as Hannah.

Hannah Baker is played by Australian actress Katherine Langford and Clay Jensen is portrayed by American actor Dylan Minnette. Both of them give very stunning performances and make us feel for the characters. We increasingly feel very sorry for Hannah due to the superb acting from Langford.

The show is executive produced by none other than Selena Gomez. After the show was released on Netflix it became one of the most talked about series on social media. This is proof of how popular and successful it is. The moral of the story is consider how you treat other people because you never know how they feel deep inside. What is even more disturbing is that it often happens in real life. In the news we hear about teenagers taking their own lives because of endless bullying by their classmates. Schools must not turn a blind eye or deaf ear to bullying but tackle it head on and eliminate it before it claims another life.
